4th suspect surrenders in slaying of hotel heir

MIAMI (AP) — The fourth suspect in the killing of a Florida hotel heir in a New York hotel has turned himself in to the FBI.

FBI spokeswoman Judy Orihuela says 25-year-old Joel Gonzalez came forward Friday in Miami, with an initial court appearance set for Monday. It wasn’t immediately clear if he had an attorney.

Prosecutors say Gonzalez took part in the killing last July of 53-year-old Ben Novack Jr. at the Hilton Rye Town in Rye Brook. Novack was heir to the founder of Miami Beach’s famed Fontainebleu Hotel.

Also charged in the alleged plot are Novack’s widow, Narcy Novack, and two other men. Prosecutors say Narcy Novack feared she would be cut out of her husband’s will and estate. The estate is estimated at $10 million.

Escaped inmate’s body found at landfill

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — Texas authorities say the body of a federal inmate who escaped from jail in El Paso was found at a landfill eight miles away in New Mexico.

El Paso County deputy Jesse Tovar said the body of 30-year-old Carlos Roberto Medina-Bailon was found Friday in a landfill in Sunland Park, N.M., that the jail’s trash company uses.

Medina-Bailon was still wearing a dark blue jail jumpsuit and knee-high rubber boots when the jail trash collector discovered his body.

Medina-Bailon had escaped from the downtown El Paso jail early Friday. Officials say he may have slipped out by hiding in a large trash container
